Despite the extended concept that online gambling’s popularity is growing fast in the UK, recent data revealed this month by the Gambling Prevalence study conducted by the National Centre for Social Research in the UK shows that only six percent of all British population have gambled online at all.

This suggests that although the access to internet-based gambling has boomed in the last years becoming more and more accessible to people, it has not been accompanied by a change in the gambling habits of the British, who still prefer to bet their money on land based casinos instead of doing it online.

The Gambling Prevalence study also shows that there has not been a significant change in the UK problem gambling since the last survey, which was carried out in 1999, despite the huge growth of the industry in the same period of time. The overall percentage of UK players categorized as "problem gamblers" remains at 0.6 percent.

The National Centre for Social Research (NatCen) is the largest independent social research institute in Britain. They have published many studies regarding the social aspects of Gambling in the UK such as “Gambling and Problem Gambling in Britain” and “Gambling Behaviour in Britain: Results from the British Gambling Prevalence Survey”.
