Slot machines limitations to be reversed

The UK government has decided to reverse the changes made last September to the regulations that limit the number of slot machines allowed in bingo rooms. Pursuant to the new legislation, the maximum number of gaming machines was reduced from eight to four, which represented losses for the already ailing bingo industry.

Sports Minister Gerry Sutcliffe, who recently promised to help the industry, has sponsored the annulment of the modifications in an attempt to silence the criticism of bingo operators, who accused him of acting too slowly. Due to double taxation, the smoke ban and slot machine restrictions, 100 clubs have been forced to close in the past four years.

“This marks the end of a long and frustrating wait,” Bingo Association chief executive Paul Talboys commented. “We believe today’s announcement will go some way to addressing the adverse position bingo operates under. Our hope is that this can be implemented as soon as practicably possible, as the future of many clubs depends on it.”

Minister Sutcliffe has also informed that there are plans to present a review of low stake gaming machines in about a year. “Bingo clubs play a crucial role in many communities and we want to see that continue. I hope to implement these plans by the end of the year,” Sutcliffe explained.

Bingo club operators are also asking for the VAT on bingo products to be removed, in order not to be doubly taxed.
