The new slot machine law has been put into practice and many of Sussex’s arcades are either closed or being closed down. The new law has made it almost impossible for current slot machine arcades to continue working the way they currently function.
The new regulation obliges slot machine arcades to have a maximum betting of £1, and only up to four of them are allowed in one establishment, no matter how large it might be. Current slot machine owners said that this action has resulted in a 40% decrease of their income since the law was approved in September.
The proprietors of slot machine arcades are demanding radical changes to be made to the law. In particular, the Laughing Policeman arcade will certainly disappear by next year, as will the Treasure Island slot machine arcade in Eastbourne and Family Leisure in Brighton.
Some of them claim that they have invested millions of pounds on their venture and that they do not want to see it go bankrupt. They say that their business is being received by betting shops where restrictions have not been set and that their jobs will come to an end if nothing is done about it.
